Tennessee Scholars Core Principles

Tennessee Scholars Core Principles

·           Meets all core course requirements as required by State Board of Education

·       Works with existing statewide graduation paths for high school

·       Represents an attainable “stretch goal” that the majority of high school students can attain if they apply themselves

    ·       Meets the expectations of evolving workplace, not just an entry-level set of skills

     ·       Inculcates civic-mindedness in high school students

·       Develops a sense of personal responsibility for attendance and behavior

                   Key Practices

The Tennessee Scholars has identified a set of Key Practices that impact workforce development and student achievement.   Following is a list of those key practices to help provide a more meaningful understanding of the direction of the Tennessee Scholars Initiative.

Rigor-- Motivate students for taking the more rigorous courses in high school by offering rewards, recognition, jobs and scholarships.

Career/Technical –- Encourage each student to take classes that would give them some type of work experience before they graduate from high school. Provide students access to those classes.

Technology—Stress that a strong background in technology is essential for job and college preparation.

Business Led—Local businesses support students by making presentations, incentives, job preferential hiring, and scholarships.

Community Service—Provide opportunities for students to serve in the community along side other business volunteers.

Guidance –- Involve students and their parents in a guidance and course selection process.   That helps to develop positive relationships and assures completion of the Scholars program of study.
